Clock Is Ticking On Gambling Bill

Senate President Sets Deadline for 8:00 Tonight.

Officials with knowledge of the discussions tell The Associated Press that Massachusetts Senate leaders have made a gambling proposal to House leaders that includes two options as the sides try to break a logjam.

The officials spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because negotiations are ongoing.

One option would allow two casinos while the second would place the decision about casinos and racetrack slots in the hands of an independent commission.

Legislative leaders are planning to meet in the House Speaker Robert DeLeo's office Wednesday.

The 1:30 p.m. gathering follows back-and-forth proposals Tuesday night and Wednesday morning between DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray.

Both sides agree on adding casinos, but DeLeo favors allowing slot machines at the state's four racetracks, which Murray opposes.
