Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany said Officer Richard Bennett, 28, submitted a short resignation letter June 30 after complaints from colleagues prompted two internal affairs investigations, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Shastany said the first investigation found Bennett left his post during patrol hours last month to be photographed in uniform with Bridget "The Midget" Powers, a 3-foot-9-inch woman billed as "the world's smallest porn star," at strip bar Club Alex's in Stoughton.

The chief said the second investigation found Bennett committed misconduct by altering his .40-caliber Glock semiautomatic service pistol by adding a laser sight.

Bennett told The Boston Herald leaving his post for the photograph was a "stupid decision."

"A part of me wants to say, 'Where was the news when I pulled someone out of a burning car last year?'" Bennett said. "You know all the good things you do, and I'm going to be remembered for one stupid decision. It just sucks."
